Youth living in economically distressed communities often face overwhelming challenges. In these
neighborhoods, crimes are charged at higher rates, families experience more trauma, and the lack of economic opportunity can lead to food insecurity and even homelessness. These conditions serve as major barriers to a quality education and strong community supports causing youth and their families to be less likely to enjoy affordable care for their mental and physical well-being and more likely to have poorer overall health.

However, there is hope. Research indicates that these environmental challenges are buffered when youth build meaningful connections to people and institutions in their communities.1 Therefore, efforts to promote broad and meaningful civic engagement can be a core public health tool because it can change the conditions in which youth and their families live.

The STRIVE Initiative, (Strengthening Tomorrow Requires Initiative & Vision Everyday), a non-profit 501(c)(3) based in Pottstown, PA, was founded by two local residents who are a testament to the power of community connection and its ability to help youth defy the odds! Our mission is to unify and strengthen communities by facilitating and fostering connections that equip and empower stakeholders, especially our youth to make positive, personal, professional and societal impact. We envision an inclusive and diverse community in which members have the power and voice to fulfill the dreams they have for themselves and their communities.
